JP animation (+α) DVD sales, week of 5/12

This week was so incredibly easy I’m not sure why I didn’t do it earlier, other than “Macross got in the way”. Nothing particularly notable, except the inclusion of #76, one of Hirano’s idol DVDs, as “not animation, but related”.

JP weekly book sales for 5/19

As a side note for light novels, especially, to explain why they often have two volume numbers: They’re usually subtitled with the name of the current plot arc, each arc taking two or three books that are commonly called “upper” and “lower” or “upper”, “middle”, and “lower”. With no analogous English, it’s my opinion that the best usage is “Series (vol. #): Subtitle (arc vol. #)”.
As for Soul Eater’s appearance, note that all total sales are since Oricon (and coincidentally I) started tracking; apparently the TV adaption has made volume 1 sell steadily in the 10,000 range, and this week things were stale enough to let it poke through into the top 30.
Finally, take note of lack of word wrap; if something looks like it extends out of the text column, it probably -does-.

An appreciation of “heresy”

To speak of the English language is to speak of something that’s less a tongue and more a sort of verbal headcheese. The simplest of concepts have dozens of terms to choose from, and even the source which prescripivists habitually cite only delays its assimilation of new phrases due to the constraints of researching etymology and printing new editions. Yet, both despite and as a symptom of this Charibdic state, there’s no simple and good phrase for describing when someone’s wrong about that which properly, descriptively, cannot be mistaken.

Holy shit at Evangelion, nice numbers for Aria and Kitaro, Votoms and ZSZS continue their modest success, Gundam a bit low, Bamboo Blade starts to slip, and I guess we aren’t seeing Genshiken S3 anytime soon.

JP animation DVD sales, weekly for 4/28

Numbers for 5/5 are coming in about an hour, just wanted to get these out of the way. It seems my source is going biweekly. Nothing really notable this week, except for the failure of Noble Masters and the bleed-out of Stranger.

JP weekly comic sales for 5/5

The new formatting software is beginning to pay off; this was basically a background activity while catching the too many shows that are on Thursday night. Notable today are my NOT forgetting the relevant non-comic publications, and the general lack of huge releases.
Perhaps it’d be better if I listed author and imprint, followed by parenthesized syndicating magazine? It’s more in line with how things are organized in terms of books, but when deciding format I thought English-speakers are more familiar, and more concerned, with the magazines than the imprints.

First off, the three non-comic-trade books this week that charted:

☆ *8 - *8 1 *14,634 *14,634 **672 Mobile Suit Gundam UC 4 Battle of Palau
FUKUI Harutoshi, Gundam Ace (Kadokawa Comics Ace)
☆ 14 - 14 1 *11,005 *11,005 1,260 Mobile Suit Gundam UC 4 Battle of Palau (with MG Unicorn weapons)
FUKUI Harutoshi, Gundam Ace (Kadokawa Comics Ace)
↓ 17 *6 *1 5 *10,520 189,663 1,300 Monster Hunter 2nd G Official Grade-Up Book
V Jump Editorial Staff, Shueisha

And, top 30 comics:

KAWAHARA Kazune, Extra Margaret (Margaret Comics)
